Netscape's Layer Tags

Although layers are normally created by applying positioning attributes to <div> and <span> tags, the concept of layers is named after two proprietary tags introduced by Netscape with its first beta release of Navigator 4.

The <layer> and <ilayer> tags act similarly to CSS-P layers, in that you can control placement and overlap, but they also possess a few additional properties. The <ilayer> tag is for inline layers, which are embedded in the parent layer (Figure 14.66). You can also nest two layer tags; nesting behavior is somewhat different with Netscape layers (Figure 14.67).
