ActiveX

ActiveX is a software architecture developed by Microsoft for use in Internet Explorer 3 or later. An ActiveX control can act like a plug-in and invisibly play multimedia content, or it can act like Java or JavaScript and serve as a miniature program that runs inside the Internet Explorer Web browser.

There is a plug-in for Netscape 4 that plays some ActiveX controls, but support is not built into the program and the plug-in should not be counted on to work. Dreamweaver tries to be as cross-platform as possible about this; you can insert an ActiveX control and specify the Netscape plug-in equivalent, and Dreamweaver will write code for both programs simultaneously.
