Chapter 7. Inserting and Playing Media > Sound File Parameters

Sound File Parameters

If you want your visitors to enjoy your embedded sound, they'll need to have the correct plug-in on their computer, which is no sweat if they're using a browser that supports such things. If you want to use a dialog box to insert these parameters (rather than typing them into the code), see Extra Parameters, later in this chapter.

Sound File Types

.AIFF: Macintosh Audio format.

.AU: Sun Audio format.

.DCR: Shockwave audio (also used for Shockwave movies). Requires Shockwave plug-in.

.LA, .LAM, .LMA: Netscape streaming audio. Handled automatically by Netscape 4 and higher.

.MID, .MIDI: MIDI electronic music format. Requires plug-in in Netscape 2.0.

.MOD, .RMF: Beatnik audio format. Requires Beatnik plug-in. (Note: once Beatnik is installed, it will also handle .AIFF, .AU, .MID, and .WAV by default.)

.MOV: QuickTime audio (also used for QuickTime movies). Requires QuickTime plug-in.

.MPG: MPEG, or MP3 files, which provide CD-quality sound. Requires an audio plug-in such as RealPlayer or QuickTime or a helper app such as WinAmp.

.RAM, .RPM: RealAudio (also used for RealVideo). Requires RealAudio or RealPlayer plug-in.

.WAV: Windows Audio.
