Lesson 8. Using Templates > Adding Editable Areas of a Template

Adding Editable Areas of a Template

As a rule, all areas of a template are locked. If you want to be able to change information on each page that uses the template, you need to create “editable” areas or regions. Everything not explicitly defined as editable is locked. You can make changes to both the editable and locked areas of a template, but on a page built from a template, you can change only the editable regions.

1.
Click in the cell for the product title (directly below the previous and next buttons) to position the insertion point. Use the tag selector at the bottom of the document window to select the cell.

This section of the page needs to be editable so you can change the content in subsequent pages.

NOTE

If the file <<Template>> (gear.dwt) is not already open, choose Window > Templates. The Assets panel opens to the Templates category. The template you just created, gear, appears in the list. In the Assets panel, double-click the name of the template to open it. Alternatively, you can select the name in the list and click Edit at the bottom of the Assets panel.

2.
Choose Modify > Templates > New Editable Region.

The New Editable Region dialog box opens.

3.
Type title for the region name and click OK.

Don't use any special characters for region names. Make each name unique—you can't have the same region name in the same template.

Since you selected the table cell when you defined the editable region, the region name appears on the top left corner of the cell.

4.
Click inside the cell for the product picture (directly below the product title cell you just defined as editable) in order to position the insertion point. Don't select the cell. Choose Modify > Templates > New Editable Region and name the region picture.

Because the insertion point was within the cell when you defined the editable region, you'll see the region name at the top left of the cell, and the region name will be placed in braces within the cell. When you apply the template to a document, you will need to select the braces and name, and then replace them with text, images, or other content.

NOTE

With this method, anything in the cell before or after the insertion point will be uneditable.

5.
Using the tag selector as you did with the first cell, select the cell for product description. Choose Modify > Templates > New Editable Region and name the region description.

If you do not see the region names, choose View > Visual Aids > Invisible Elements.

The Next, Previous, and Buy Now buttons on the page also need to be editable.

6.
Select the Next button and choose Modify > Templates > New Editable Region, naming the region next. Do the same for the Previous button, naming the region previous, and for the Buy Now button, naming the region buy.

Anything that will need to change, including links, needs to be in an editable region.

7.
Save the file.

The region names appear highlighted within the cells to help you identify the areas you've designated as editable.

Leave this file open to use in the next exercise.
