Lesson 1. Learning the Basics > Centering and Indenting Text

Centering and Indenting Text

You may want to center some text, such as a heading, to make it more prominent.

1.
In surf_hawaii.html, position the insertion point in the heading “Hawaii – Surfer's Paradise.” Click the Align Center button in the property inspector.

The heading is centered.

Many times, you'll want to indent the text on the page. You can use the Text Indent and Text Outdent buttons in the property inspector for this purpose. When you use Text Indent the text is indented at the both left and right margins of the page. You cannot control the amount of indentation because the browser automatically determines it.

2.
Select the first six body paragraphs of surf_hawaii.htm and click Text Indent in the property inspector or choose Text > Indent.

All the text on the page is indented. But your page might look better if only the list in the middle of the page were indented. In the following steps, you'll remove the indent from the first two paragraphs.

3.
Select the first two body paragraphs of the document. Click the Text Outdent button in the property inspector or choose Text > Outdent. Save the file and preview it in the browser.

The four paragraphs you formatted appear indented in the browser window.
