Lesson 1. Learning the Basics > Creating a Line Break

Creating a Line Break

If you want to create a single line break in the text, you need to insert a line-break character. This technique is useful for an address line, for example, when you want a new line for each line in the address without the extra spacing of a paragraph.

1.
In surf_hawaii.html, find the paragraph that begins “Besides helping you find….” Position the insertion point before the text “Big Kahuna Surf and Swim Shop.” Then press Shift+Enter (Windows) or Shift+Return (Macintosh).

The text after the insertion point moves to the next line. A new paragraph has not been created, so no additional spacing appears between the two lines.

2.
Move the text “1134 Paradise Lane” to the next line and “Hawaii, USA” to a new line. Position the insertion point before the text “Sign up at” and press Enter (Windows) or Return (Macintosh) to insert a new paragraph.

If you use two line breaks, you can simulate the appearance of a new paragraph. Because you are not actually creating a new paragraph, however, you may have difficulty when you apply formatting to it.
