Chapter 7. Site & Page Design > Food for Thought

Food for Thought

The information in this chapter should have gotten the wheels in your head turning, thinking about site design and what you can do to make it effective. Here are a few exercises to help you come up with a solid plan. To see what other readers think or to share your thoughts with them, visit the book's companion Web site at http://www.smallbusinessonweb.com/.

  • Fire up your Web browser and go surfing. Visit ten sites you've never seen before. (You can start with your usual Home page, then click links to surf to new sites or use a search engine to find sites about a specific topic.) What do you like or dislike about the design of each site? How effective is site navigation?

  • Consult the outline of site contents that you created in the previous chapter. If you used that outline to set up a hierarchy for your Web site, could you apply the Three Click Rule? If not, how could you change the outline to make the hierarchy more shallow?

  • Think about navigation features you can include on your site. Which do you think are best for you? Why?
