Food for Thought

By now, you should have a good idea of how you can promote your Web site. Here are a few suggestions for putting those ideas into action. To share your thoughts with other readers or see what other readers had to say about the topics in this chapter, visit the book's companion Web site, http://www.smallbusinessonweb.com/.

  • Think about the printed materials you use in your business. Which ones can be used to promote your Web site?

  • Make a list of the ten search engines you use most. (If you don't know ten search engines, visit Search Engine Watch at http://www.searchenginewatch.com/ to find them.) Now use those search engines to look for companies like yours. What do you think of the search results?

  • Write down the description and keywords that apply to your site as a whole. Use them in meta tags on your Home page. Now add appropriate description and keyword meta tags to the rest of the pages on your site.

  • Visit the ten search engines you listed a moment ago. Look for and follow "Add URL" links on each site to add your Web site to the search engine's database.

  • Use your favorite search engines to look for sites that would be appropriate for reciprocating links. Request links and see how you do.
