Chapter 9. The Elements of Scripting > The form of functions

The form of functions

Just a few paragraphs ago I referred to the key as being a "Lingo element." That's true enough, but it's time to get down to specifics and identify the kindsof Lingo elements we'll be using in this book. In the case of the key, it's a function, one of dozens of functions available to you in Director.

Here we slip into the realm of the intangible; a function doesn't "do" anything—at least, nothing that shows up on the Stage. Functions are Lingo elements that return a value. They are the Lingo tools that help you determine the status and conditions of things. They're the probes and scanners, so to speak, used to retrieve data about the state of something at a given time. The function you use depends on what you want to know.
