Points to remember

The rules start mutating in the rarefied atmosphere of network-savvy Lingo and Director features. Keep yourself clear on these concepts:

  • Director 8's primary file management capabilities are network aware. You can open movies and Casts stored directly in an online environment; no need for Web browsers, file transfer applications, or any other intermediary.

  • Cast members can also be created from media imported directly from the network. The same goes for MIAW movies.

  • A number of veteran Lingo elements are now applicable to network navigation, such as the property the searchPaths. This property functions with URLs as well as with local hard-drive directories, though care should be used not to burden searches with slower network operations.

  • NetLingo is a specialized genre of Lingo created especially for online operations. It requires the presence of the NetLingo Xtra to function fully.

  • Events involving network operations can almost never be carried out instantaneously, which is why Director treats them somewhat differently. Net events are best viewed more as procedures than as single occurrences. You can start them, check on them from time to time, and even cancel them before they're done.

  • Since net events proceed at an unpredictable pace, they don't always conclude in the same order in which they were launched. That's why each is assigned a unique netID. The netID of a network operation should be saved and then used in later network Lingo commands such as netDone and netError.
