Director online file access

Our first example of Director's net savvy isn't the province of Lingo or even of Shockwave. It's that feature first noted way back in Chapter 1, when I pointed out the extra button marked "Internet" in the standard Open dialog box. Simply put, some file-related operations are almost as easy to undertake online as they are on your local system. You don't need a browser or file transfer software or any other tools. About the only complicating factor is that you need to know the exact URL of the files in question, because Director doesn't let you browse through the directories and subdirectories of HTTP- and FTP-configured servers.

Opening Director files from the Net

A Director movie, Cast file, or media element can "live" in an online server, without being converted to the Shockwave format. It can't be played back in a Web browser, but it can be opened just like any other file of its type. Here's quick proof (make sure you're online before proceeding):
