Points to remember

Here's a closing recap:

  • Maximize the performance of your Director-based production by using memory management techniques. Set the correct Unload value for individual Cast members, and set the appropriate loading point for Casts as a whole. Also, make sure that graphic Cast members aren't saved at excessive color depth, and that all unneeded Cast members are deleted from your movies.

  • Use the Save and Compact command rather than Save for a possible performance increase and reduction in file size.

  • Cut the disk from a virus-free, file-optimized hard drive (or partition thereof).

  • If you distribute protected versions of your Director movies, they can be used—but not opened or modified—by others. Take care to keep unprotected versions of your files, though, in case you want to make changes.

  • Before distributing your production, take pains to make sure that all linkages—to external Casts, multiple movie files, and Xtras vital to the production—are maintained on the distributable version. Don't forget that the property the searchPaths can be used to maintain these linkages.

  • Pay special attention to, and test extensively, all sound and QuickTime digital video to make sure that they play adequately on bothWindows and Macintosh platforms.
