Thus far, we've created a character, manipulated him into a moment of crisis, and articulated his pain. Now we need to get him out of this fix. We could devise and execute an elaborate animation to do this, but there's an alternative that's elegant (and easier): using a transition effect to imply action. Transitions are generally used to control the flow of one screen into another, but they can also be used to choreograph the entrances and exits of individual sprites on the Stage.
