Chapter 15. Deeper into Shockwave > Other considerations

Other considerations

Following are a few other issues to keep in mind during the Shockwave authoring process.

Managing the plug-in issue

In most cases, the viewer-side technology for Shockwave is provided via a plug-in file (or the comparable ActiveX control). The plug-in is free, available to anyone using the Web, and easy to download if you don't already have it. It even comes bundled with current Windows and Macintosh operating systems as well as with major browsers. Although it's getting to the point where most people who use the Web have Shockwave, it's still not safe to assume that everyone does, nor that everyone has the most recent version that your movie requires. To be a gracious host to your online visitors, it helps to do two things: Offer to the Shockwave-less an opportunity to download the plug-in, and provide those who decline an alternative page.
