The flow of function

Now that we've named and cataloged the pieces, the next step is to figure out how they go together. Unless you are building nothing more complicated than a slide show, you'll probably do that by building a flowchart, a document that graphically displays the possible pathways through the scenes.

You'll find that the connections of even a modest interactive project can be a tricky business to map out on paper. That's because such diagrams are inherently linear interpretations of a nonlinear process, and accuracy and clarity can quickly clash—if a flowchart is comprehensive, it's often incomprehensible. But just as an artist can sketch a two-dimensional representation of a three-dimensional object, a good multimedia maker can graph the general flow of functionality in at least enough detail for evaluation and editing.
