Chapter 11. Working with Style Sheets > Types of Style Sheets

Types of Style Sheets

All types of style sheets support the same content-formatting options (properties) and most of the same style rules (selectors), but they differ in the way they connect to Web pages. Internal style sheets format the content of a single HTML document, whereas external style sheets can be used to change the appearance of a group of documents. Within each category are two methods for applying style sheets and styles to text.

Internal style sheets

There are two types of internal style sheets: embedded and inline. Each is actually within the HTML page it supports. An embedded style sheet is included in the document's Head section. Embedded style sheets apply formatting or positioning properties to all occurrences of an HTML tag within the document. They are contained within the <STYLE></STYLE> tag and use the syntax described above to specify individual styles.
