JavaScript

Netscape originally created JavaScript as a scripting language to enhance Web pages. JavaScript can be used to give life to a Web page with moving banners, animation, and other decorative touches. JavaScript can also be used to give instructions to Java applets or link multiple applets together.

The most common and powerful use of JavaScript these days is the manipulation of HTML pages and elements with scripted actions. Actions can create effects or invoke Dynamic HTML (DHTML) functions. For more on using actions built with JavaScript, see Chapter 17, "Using Actions."
