Creating Links

You can add links to your GoLive pages by using the toolbar's New Link button or one of the many Inspectors to type and configure them, or by using GoLive's various tools to create links to items stored within a GoLive site. Either way, you can link to files in your site, or to remote sites, e-mail addresses, and FTP servers.

Tip

When you link to a remote URL, whether it's a Web site, e-mail address, FTP server, or some other resource that is not part of your site, you'll use the full URL, as described in the previous section. If you want to link to a file stored on your hard disk, and that is part of your Web site, be sure that the item you link to (HTML file, image, or multimedia file) is located within the folder that contains your GoLive site files. If you are not using GoLive's site management tools to store and maintain your site, be sure that both the file you link from and the file you link to are stored in the same relative location that they will be when you upload your files to a Web server. In other words, build your hierarchy of files and folders before you begin making links with GoLive. If you ignore this step and move files or change file or folder names after you have made links, the links will not work because the URLs you create will be incorrect.

One way to improve your chances of avoiding broken links is to build your Web site with GoLive's site management tools, as described in Chapter 14, "Building Sites."
