Chapter 5. Working with Images > Adding Layered Photoshop Images

Adding Layered Photoshop Images

Savvy Photoshop users use layers to make complex, visually stunning layouts. Layered Photoshop documents can be directly imported into GoLive, either as described above, by "flattening" the contents of the layers into a single GIF or JPEG document, or by preserving them as individual elements. The layers are preserved as floating boxes, which can be stacked on top of one another. Using layered images will bulk up your layout because multiple image files are used to create a layered effect, but the flexibility and quality you gain are often worth the trouble and a few extra seconds of download time for your site's visitors.

To import Photoshop layers:

1.
From the File menu, select Import > Photoshop as HTML.

2.
Locate a Photoshop file containing layers and click Open.

3.
Select a folder (or make a new one) which will contain the Photoshop components. You will usually want to store this folder within your site folder.

4.
The Save for Web dialog box opens, displaying the first layer of the Photoshop document. Configure the settings and format you would like to use for the layer.

5.
Click OK. The next layer appears in the Save for Web dialog box.

6.
Configure it, click OK, and repeat the procedure for each layer in the document.
