Planning a Strategy for Multiple Casts

A movie's casts can be stored either internally or externally. Internal casts are stored within the movie file and cannot be shared by other movies. Director automatically creates one internal cast when you create a movie, and this default internal cast is the one you have been using throughout this book. External casts are stored as separate files outside the movie. An external cast must be explicitly linked to a movie to which it contributes assets, and a movie can have many linked external casts. A single external cast can be linked to many movies, and thus external casts often serve as libraries for commonly used movie elements. You can use Lingo to switch the external casts linked to a movie while the movie is running. You work with all cast members in the same way, regardless of whether the cast is internal or external.

External casts offer some especially powerful benefits, because you can change the contents of the cast without having to change any of the movies to which the cast is linked. Here are just a few ideas:
