Lesson 26. Using a List Database > Setting the membernum Property

Setting the membernum Property

Using getaProp, count, char, and concatenation, you now have created a variable that holds the name of the view that should be displayed in response to a user's choices. To put that view on the stage using Lingo, you will need to get the cast member number of the view based on its cast member name. In this task, you will use a new cast member property, number, to find the cast member number of a specified cast member. The syntax for this property is member(whichCastmember).number. Then you can use the memberNum sprite property (which you have already used several times in this book) to assign this cast member to sprite 1: the view displayed on the stage.

In the task "Using Chunk Expressions," you typed put gCurrentView in the Message window, and the window returned "vict.n" (Victoria north) because that was the view with which you initialized the variable at the start of the movie. In the preceding task, you changed gCurrentView to "nubia.e." How do you think gCurrentView and memberNum can be used to display a new view?
