Lesson 26. Using a List Database > Using Chunk Expressions

Using Chunk Expressions

The commands you have already used will get the location of a user's choice from the gLocationList variable and put it into the newView variable. However, the location name isn't enough to choose a cast member for display. The view to be displayed on the stage depends on both the location and the compass direction the user selects. In the next tasks, you will combine two values into a single value—adding "n" to "vict", for example—to arrive at a complete cast member name that reflects the user's choices for both options. To do this, you will use two Lingo expressions, char and count, designed to work with strings of text.

Chunk expressions are any character, word, or line in any text source such as field cast members or variables that hold strings. For example, the field cast member Location codes you created in the previous lesson is a chunk expression.
