Adding An Introduction

Now you'll add a sound and logo to the beginning of the presentation. These movie elements will serve as a sort of advertisement that users will see as the presentation begins. In this task, you'll add these elements along with some transitions that will present the main menu to users after the sound finishes playing.

Drag the Intro cast member to sound channel 1, frame 1, in the score.

As with all the other sprites you've created for this lesson, Director adds the sound sprite with a 13-frame duration. You can now see why you have earlier been creating your main menu at frame 15. The sprites for the opening sequence will span frames 1 through 13. Frame 14 is left blank to improve the readability of the score. The main menu section starts at frame 15.

Next you'll create a tempo setting that signals Director to play the whole sound before letting the playback head advance.


Instead of dragging a sound from the Cast window, you can double-click the sound channel to display a dialog box that lists available sounds. Choosing Modify > Frame > Sound opens the same dialog box.


If you have sound in only one frame, occasionally it won't play smoothly. To avoid this problem, always extend sounds so they're at least two frames long.

Double-click frame 13 of the tempo channel. In the dialog box, click Wait for Cue Point, select { End} in the Cue Point field, and then click OK.

Cue points are fixed points within a sound file; they are similar to markers in a Director score. By default, every sound file in the cast has a start cue point and an end cue point. You can add additional cue points to a sound file using a sound editing program like Macromedia's SoundEdit 16.

As a sound plays, Director looks for cue points in the sound files, and you can use those cue points to control the movement of the playback head. In this case, you have instructed Director to keep the playback head in frame 13 until it encounters the end cue point—that is, until the sound finishes playing. Without this tempo setting, you would hear only a few notes of the sound as the playback head traveled quickly through frames 1 through 13 and then immediately continued on.

Next you'll place the logo in the score so users have something to view while they hear the sound play.

Drag the Logo5 cast member to frame 1, channel 1.

Your score should now look like this:

The presentation begins with a nice sound and a logo, but the logo just disappears when the playback head reaches the blank stage in frame 14, and the menu appears quickly after that. In the next step, you'll add two transitions that will make the appearance of the menu much more dramatic.

Double-click frame 14 of the transition channel, select the Edges In, Square transition, and click OK.

Double-click frame 15 of the transition channel, select Center Out, Square, and click OK.

The two transitions will make the logo seem to collapse into the middle of the screen. This focuses the user's eyes on the center of the stage, and from that point, your main menu appears. Very dramatic!

Save your work and play the movie.

Now the logo begins the movie as the sound plays. Then the transitions you just added reveal the main menu. The playback head pauses so users can begin to get the feel of the presentation they will be exploring.

So far, you've been concentrating on creating the layout of the presentation's opening. You'll be adding more frames to this movie in the next two lessons.
