Obtaining Shockwave Plug-Ins and the Browser Software

To view a Director movie in a browser, you'll need to save it as a Shockwave movie, and you'll need the latest Shockwave Director player for your Web browser. If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer with Windows, you will need the ActiveX version of the Shockwave Director player. If you are using Netscape Navigator or any browser that supports Netscape plug-ins, you will need the plug-in version of the Shockwave Director player; different plug-in versions are used for Windows and the Macintosh. The most up-to-date version of the Shockwave Director player can be downloaded for free from Macromedia's Web difference between ActiveX and plug-ins should be transparent. The Macromedia Web site also has a wealth of technical support information, tips, and other resources for those developing Shockwave movies. Shockwave has a lot of built-in features that allow Shockwave to update itself with the most current version and to repair incomplete installations automatically when the end user does not have the latest version.

Note

Before using Shockwave, you should visit Macromedia's Web site to be sure you have the latest version of the Shockwave Player. You can test your system by playing a shocked movie—if the movie plays, you're all set; otherwise, you need to download the latest version.
