Lesson 7. keyframes and layers > Exchanging Cast Members

Exchanging Cast Members

This animation could be improved by adding different versions of the paper so that it looks as if it's flapping as it animates across the stage. You'll exchange cast members to add this enhancement. Since you will be dealing with individual cells for this portion of the lesson, it will be more convenient for you if you have the score enlarged to the point where it is easy to select individual cells. Zooming to 200% should take care of that.

2.
In the score, click the Zoom Menu button (at the right side of the frame channel) and set the zoom to 200%.

In the score, select channel 3, frame 2. In the cast, select cast member 2 (Doc2). Then click the Exchange Cast Members button on the toolbar (also available from the Edit menu or by choosing Ctrl+E in Windows or Command+E on the Macintosh).

Now cast member 1 is replaced with cast member 2 in channel 3, frame 2. This is a slightly altered version of the paper. You should see the label Doc2 if you place the mouse pointer over the cell long enough for the data tip to show.

3.
In the score, select channel 3, frame 3. In the cast, select cast member 3 (Doc3). Then click the Exchange Cast Members button.

This is another version of the paper. Cast member 3 replaces cast member 1 in this cell.

4.
In the score, select channel 3, frame 4. In the cast, select cast member 4 (Doc4). Then click the Exchange Cast Members button.

This is the last altered version of the paper. Now cast member 4 follows cast members 1, 2, and 3.

5.
Repeat this exchange process until you have exchanged the sequence 1, 2, 3, 4 for all the sprites in channel 3.

6.
Repeat the exchange process for the cast members in channel 6, frames 21 through 30

These are the last parts of the paper animation.

7.
Rewind and play the animation.

You should now see the paper flap and fly from one folder to another. This animation looks much better now that it uses different versions of the paper.

8.
Save your work.

If you aren't satisfied with the flapping of the paper, here is a suggestion for a quick modification.

9.
Double-click cast member 2 (Doc2) to open it in the Paint window.

At the top of the Paint window tool buttons is the Marquee button, a square dotted line for selecting an area. Once an area is selected, you can apply any of several paint modifications to the graphic.

10.
Select the Marquee tool; then hold the mouse down on the tool. In the menu that pops up, make sure that Shrink is selected.

The Shrink option causes the selection area to shrink to surround only the object, rather than a larger rectangular area.

11.
Select the image of the paper using the Marquee tool.

12.
Use the Warp tool to move one of the corners of the paper, thereby warping it. Follow the same steps to warp cast member 3, Doc3, but warp a different corner.

13.
Rewind and play the movie.

Now you should see a definite flutter as the paper moves between the file folders.
