Lesson 2. Animated Bullet Lists > Aligning Sprites with the Align Panel

Aligning Sprites with the Align Panel

You have positioned the sprites on the stage by dragging them into place—an easy way to get them into position, but not very effective if you want them to be precisely aligned. Director offers a useful tool for aligning sprites on the stage, which you will use in this task. In these steps, you'll align just the bullets. Later you'll align the text sprites.

1.
Click the stage or an empty cell in the score to deselect the sprites.

You're going to work with the three bullet sprites only. To deselect the currently selected sprites you can click an empty cell in the score.

2.
On the stage, click one of the bullet sprites. Then hold down the Shift key and click each of the other bullet sprites.

This is a way to select sprites without using the score. If you look at the score, you'll see that the sprites in channels 5, 7, and 9 are selected.

3.
Choose Modify > Align (Windows Ctrl+K, Macintosh Command+K).

The Align panel appears.

The objects in the Align panel appear with their left sides aligned. This gives you a preview of how the sprites on the stage will be aligned.

5.
Click the Align button.

All the bullet sprites appear vertically aligned on the stage.

6.
Close the Align panel.

In the animated bullet list, the bullets and lines of text will appear one at a time and not all at once as they appear now. The next step, then, is to sequence the sprites in the score so they appear in the same locations you have carefully established for them, but at different times.

Before you sequence the sprites, you will perform a task to make the score easier to read.
