Lesson 2. Animated Bullet Lists > Naming Cast Members

Naming Cast Members

Naming cast members makes them easier to identify in the score. The Artiststudio cast member in channel 1 got its name from the graphic you imported. You created the other sprites in the score using the Text and Paint windows, and you can give their cast members'names in those windows; but the easiest way to name a sprite and the cast member it represents is to use the Cast window.

1.
In the Cast window, click cast member 8 to select it.

2.
In the Name field at the top of the Cast window, type Bullet and then press Enter (Windows) or Return (Macintosh).

Cast member 8 and the sprites in channels 5, 7, and 9 now have names.

As you look through the score, it's much easier to see what's in each frame when names are attached to sprites. How would you name the sprites for the text in this presentation? That's right; click the text cast members and type a name in the Cast window's Name field.

This information shown for each sprite is the sprite label. As you've seen, the labels appear within the sprites in the score and include the name and number of the sprite's cast member. They can include other information about a sprite, such as its ink effect or the X and Y coordinates of the sprite's location on the stage.

You can choose the kind of information contained in sprite labels using the View > Display command or by selecting an option from the Display pop-up menu in the score. The Member option is selected by default and includes the information you see in the sprites now. You will find other options more helpful as you increase your Director skills.
