Chapter 15. Using Xtras > Understanding Xtra Types

Understanding Xtra Types

Xtras can be classified in five general types:

  • Cast-member Xtras, which add new media types that could be practically anything from a spreadsheet to a database.

  • Importing Xtras, which allow Director to bring in certain external media during movie playback, such as animated GIFs or Flash movies. Numerous importing Xtras ship with Director.

  • Transition Xtras, which add transition effects that are not built into Director (see Chapter 5, "Playing and Refining Movies" ).

  • Lingo or scripting Xtras, which add new language elements to Lingo—Director's scripting language. (See Chapter 17, "Scripting Lingo," for information on how to use these Xtras.)

  • Tool Xtras, which are designed to help you with authoring. An example is the tool Xtra that ships with the Windows version of Director, which allows you to convert WAV audio files to SWA (Shockwave audio) files. Unlike most other Xtra types, you don't distribute tool Xtras with your movies; they serve their purpose during authoring, not during playback.
