Chapter 6. Using Paint Tools > Ink Effect Choices

Ink Effect Choices

Normal

Normal is the default ink setting. This ink is simply the current foreground color and any selected pattern.

Transparent

Transparent ink makes the background color used in patterns transparent. When you paint with Transparent ink, you can see any artwork behind the pattern.

Reverse

Any color that you paint over using Reverse ink changes to its "mirror" color at the opposite end of the color palette. For example, a color ten spaces from the top of the palette changes to the color ten spaces from the bottom of the palette.

Ghost

Ghost ink paints with the current background color.

Gradient

Gradient allows you to paint with a blend of colors, ranging from the current foreground color to the current gradient destination color. The gradient options are set in the Gradient Settings dialog box.

Reveal

Reveal ink makes use of the previous cast member. As you paint with reveal ink, you uncover the previous cast member in its original foreground color.

Cycle

As you paint with Cycle ink, the color cycles through all the colors in the color palette between the current foreground color and destination color. Choose black and white for the foreground and gradient destination colors to cycle through the entire color palette.

Switch

As you paint with Switch ink, any pixels in the current foreground color that you paint over are changed into the gradient destination color.

Blend

Blend is a transparent ink. As you paint over your artwork, it remains visible, but its colors blend with the current foreground color. You can set the percentage of blend in the Paint Window Preferences dialog box.

Darkest

As you paint over an image with Darkest ink, Director compares the level of darkness of the foreground color to the pixels that you are painting over. If the foreground color is darker, the pixels of the image are replaced with its color.

Lightest

As you paint over an image with Lightest ink, Director replaces the pixels with the foreground color anywhere the foreground color is lighter than the pixels of the image.

Darken

Darken ink reduces the brightness of artwork as you paint over it. You can set the rate of this Ink effect in the Paint Window Preferences dialog box.

Lighten

Lighten ink increases the brightness of artwork as you paint over it.

Smooth

Smooth ink blurs artwork as you paint over it. It is useful for smoothing out jagged edges. It only has an effect on existing artwork.

Smear

Smear ink causes the paint of your artwork to spread or smear as you drag the Paint Brush across it. The smear occurs in the direction you drag the Paint Brush.

Smudge

Similar to Smear ink, except the colors fade faster as they are smudged.

Spread

Spread ink works with the Paint Brush. As you drag the brush across the artwork, the image under the brush is picked up and becomes the new shape for the Paint Brush.

Clipboard

Uses the contents of the clipboard as the pattern for your brush.
