Chapter 6. Using Paint Tools > Using Ink Masks

Using Ink Masks

An ink mask allows you to make certain parts of a bitmap cast member transparent so that you can see through it to other cast members in the background while other parts of the cast member remain opaque. This feature can be extremely useful. Imagine a scene in which a room with a brick wall has a window in it, and you want to be able to see the moon outside. (Figures 6.84 and 85). In such a scene, the wall would be opaque but the window transparent, so that a cast member of a moon would be visible through it.

Figure 6.84. The window in the brick wall is made transparent via an ink mask.
