Chapter 14. Making Movies for the Web > Making Streaming Shockwave Movies

Making Streaming Shockwave Movies

Streaming is the process that allows users to view a movie or hear a sound while it continues to download. It's a trick that keeps typically impatient Web users contented; they don't have to wait for the entire file to download before something happens. Even though streaming does not decrease the total time needed to download a movie, it can greatly improve the viewing experience by involving the user right from the start.

To create a streaming Shockwave movie:

1.
Choose Modify > Movie > Playback to display the Movie Playback Properties dialog box.

2.
Choose the Play While Downloading Movie option (Figure 14.50).

Figure 14.50. If you want to set a Shockwave movie to stream, choose the Play While Downloading Movie option in the Movie Playback Properties dialog box before creating the Shockwave movie.

3.
Type a value in the Download Frames Before Playing field to specify the number of complete frames to download before starting to play the movie (Figure 14.51).

If you enter 5, for example, your movie starts playing after all the cast-member media—both internal and linked—used in the first five frames of the score have completely downloaded. By default, this value is set to 1 frame. (See "Tips for Effective Streaming" later in this chapter for a tip about setting this value.)

4.
Choose the Show Placeholders option if you want rectangular placeholders to appear during playback for media elements that have not yet downloaded.

5.
Choose File > Save and Compact.

6.
Choose File > Publish to create the Shockwave movie.
