Does Microsoft own everything?

Almost, but not quite. Internet Explorer for Windows 98 tried to redefine the default color for visited links as green instead of purple. However, by then, purple had already seeped into the collective Web unconsciousness as the correct color for visited links. Internet Explorer for Windows XP quietly reverted to purple as its default color choice.
