Finding Experts Using Google

Sometimes the ask-an-expert listings can't help you find experts. Usually it's because you're looking for something fairly obscure—there's more call for “ask the biologist” than there is for “ask the specialist in freshwater ichthyology.” In that case you can do a Google search. I don't recommend this unless you are really searching for something obscure. (Don't do this looking for experts in medicine, for example, because it won't work.)

What I do when I need to find an expert this way is, basically, look for professors. So let's say I'm looking for an expert in chimpanzee anthropology. I have had no luck at the expert sites, and I want to find a professor who studies this stuff who might be willing to answer my questions. So I first create the frame of a query that will tend to limit my results to professors:
