Chapter 5. THE PRINCIPLE OF THE REINVENTED WHEEL > Finding Friendly Communities

Finding Friendly Communities

The first thing you want to do is find out where the like-minded people hang out. Where are the communities friendly to your topic? There are a few large repositories of mailing lists so we're going to start from there.

Yahoo Groups—http://groups.yahoo.com

A service of Yahoo (as you might imagine), Yahoo Groups has a directory of mailing lists that looks a lot like the regular Yahoo directory. You can either search by keyword (“kitesurfing” finds 44 results) or you can browse through the mailing lists like you'd browse the Yahoo directory. Search results include a description of the list, how many people are in the directory (giving you a sense of how active it might be), and whether the archives are public or private (sometimes you just want to get a question answered; you don't necessarily want to join a list. If the archives are public, all you have to do is browse them).
