Chapter 8. THE PRINCIPLE OF EVERY SCRAP > Putting Scraps on to Simmer

Putting Scraps on to Simmer

During the course of your search you may come across an item or a topic that you want to track, but which doesn't have immediate interest as a research topic. For example, you may be researching Western literature and want to get ongoing information about Elmer Kelton while not really wanting to pursue him as a research topic.

In that case you'll want to put that scrap of information on to simmer; in other words, you'll want to monitor the topic without putting time into researching it. This works best in the case of proper names. Use one of the monitoring services, like Google Alert or Google News, and enter your scrap there. That way you'll be assured of getting pointers to additional information on that topic without having to revisit it all the time.
