Almanacs

Don't give almanacs a bad rap. You may remember riffling through them when you were a kid, seeing the weather predictions for the upcoming year and all the old-timey “folk wisdom” about what you should take for a stomachache and when you should plant pumpkins under the full moon. But almanacs are much more than that; they contain lots of snippets of useful information about people, places, and things. And there are plenty of them available online.

TIP

Perhaps the encyclopedias listed above are too general for you. Perhaps you would like an encyclopedia of cheese or an encyclopedia of bowling. Sometimes you can find specialty encyclopedias simply by searching a full-text search engine for a keyword and the word “encyclopedia”:

cheese encyclopedia

or, if that doesn't work, try searching for the keyword in the title and the word “encyclopedia”:

intitle:cheese encyclopedia

Be sure to use a fairly common word when you're trying this technique. You're probably not going to find an encyclopedia of Especially Runny Brie (though it's the Internet, so who knows?).
