The Principle of Applied Power: Using the special syntaxes of any given Web site will increase the power of your searches tremendously. Mixing the special syntaxes will increase the power of your searches even more. But caution is urged.

There is nothing more frustrating than spending hours and hours and days and days teaching people how to do special searches, how to implement syntaxes and use carefully chosen keywords, and then watching them plunk general keywords into search engines like they were feeding dimes into a parking meter. It's like, I imagine, being a piano teacher, and spending your days teaching the finer points of beautiful concertos, only to discover that your students prefer playing “Chopsticks.” Over and over and over again.
