Part: II PRINCIPLES OF WEB SEARCHING > THE PRINCIPLE OF NICKNAMES

Chapter 7. THE PRINCIPLE OF NICKNAMES

The Principle of Nicknames: Most things, unfortunately, have nicknames. New York can be NY, Street can be St., Jennifer can be Jen or Jenny, etc. Nicknames must be accommodated in searching.

Wouldn't it be nice if there was only one way to say something and people had only one possible name? Thomas would only be Thomas; there would be no possibility of Tommy, Tom, or Tomster. Los Angeles would only be Los Angeles, it would not be L.A. or, in the case of some Web pages, LosAngeles.
