The U.S. is one country, so there's just one Web site you have to know about for searching country information, right? Yes and no; on one hand, the U.S. government has established a great clearing house for government Web sites with their site FirstGov. On the other hand, plenty of other folks have tried to map essential U.S. government Web sites too, and some of those resources are very good as well.

If state Web sites have a lot of resources, then the idea of finding anything on a government Web site might seem overwhelming—especially if you don't know from which department you should seek your information! Here's the strategy I use: I find the general kind of information I'm looking for at FirstGov, and if I need additional information I go to either a government-oriented search engine or a government-oriented searchable subject index. But I start with FirstGov.
