Chapter 16. FINDING LOCAL INFORMATION ON... > Finding Deep State Resources in Goog...

Finding Deep State Resources in Google

What will you find at state sites? It varies. You'll always find information on the state's governor (occasionally with a front page picture or even a video greeting) and some general information about the state itself, but after that it varies. New York offers a “Do Not Call” registry for citizens fed up with telemarketers; Wyoming offers a list of upcoming events on the front page and road and travel information, and Hawaii offers lookups of people who hold professional licenses in that state.

The problem with state sites is that they can hold so much information within their main sites and subsites (subsites can be anything in the state.xx.us domain). North Carolina, for example, has 100 counties and hundreds more cities and towns. Each of those entities could potentially have its own Web page within the North Carolina Web site. And that doesn't even count the state-level information like vital records, land management, etc.
