Chapter 17. FINDING IMAGES > Avoiding the Naughty Bits

Avoiding the Naughty Bits

Most image search engines have a filter option on them. If you do any searching for images at all you'll soon find out why there's a filter option. Even the most innocuous search terms you can think of have the potential to return search results with Naughty Bits.

For the purpose of this chapter all searches are assumed to be run with the filters on. If your tolerance is high, by all means leave it turned off. If your tolerance is very low or you're searching with someone who absolutely must not be exposed to those images (like a small child or your extremely conservative grandmother), consider searching only kid-friendly or specialized engines that are indexed by humans (not Web spiders) and are guaranteed not to have any inappropriate content. Yes, it does greatly restrict your image searching options, but it sure beats paying for ten years of therapy for grandma. We'll cover kid-safe searching a little later in the book.
