Sound Formats

In the beginning there was beep. And it was good. But man, it was boring! The Internet's come a long way since the first sound formats back in the early 90s. Now there are lots of different sound formats. Some of them are very popular and you'll see them every day, and some of them are less popular than they used to be.

Popular Sound Formats

MP3

Unless you've been living under a rock, you've heard about MP3. It's a very popular sound format for music. Why? Because the MP3 format allows for lots of compression with very little sound loss, leading to great-sounding music in fairly small sizes. In my experience downloading music (from Emusic.com), it seems to come out to about 1MB per minute of music. Howstuffworks.com has a great article on how MP3 music works: http://www.howstuffworks.com/mp3.htm/printable.
