The principles of design as applied to text have been developed over five hundred years of print publishing: books, magazines, newspapers, leaflets, posters—even things like record albums and menus. By contrast, sophisticated text design for the screen is barely more than a decade old. So, we borrow what we've learned from print publishing and apply it to the online world as best we can. Sometimes the translation is smooth and successful, other times you have to improvise.
