Chapter 19. Working with Files > Downloading Files

Downloading Files

Before you can use any of the programs available on the Web, you first have to find them, and then download them from their current location to your PC. Fortunately, downloading files is a fairly easy process. There are some variations to the procedure, but overall, it’s pretty straightforward. In a nutshell, all you have to do is the following:

1.
Create a special download directory on your computer’s hard drive.

2.
Find and download the file you want.

3.
If the file was compressed (generally in a Zip file), decompress (or unzip) the file, using a utility such as WinZip. (You can download a copy of WinZip from any of the major download sites.)

4.
If the file you downloaded was a software program, you’ll need to install the software. Installation instructions are usually included somewhere on the download information page or in a readme file included with the file download. In most cases, installation involves running a file named setup.exe or install.exe; after the setup program launches, follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation.

5.
Delete the original compressed (Zip) file.
