Chapter 15. Webcams > Understanding the Webcam Phenomenon

Understanding the Webcam Phenomenon

A Webcam is a camera that is linked to a Web page to provide continuous images or streaming video via the Internet. When you point your browser to a Webcam page, you get a live look at whatever the camera is pointing at. (If you’re looking at a still image, that image will be updated periodically—typically once a minute or so.)

Why would anyone want to broadcast images over the Web? For some, it’s a source of income. For others, it’s a social statement. For others still, it’s a way to distribute important information, visually. For even more, it’s a private tool for security or personal communication.
