Chapter 5. The Wireless Web > Mobile Connections on Various Devices

Mobile Connections on Various Devices

Although most people in the United States access the Internet via their personal computers, this isn’t the case in all countries around the globe. In Japan, for example, more than five million people access the Web through their mobile phones.

On-the-go Web access isn’t for everyone, nor is it good for everything you might want to do on the Internet. Because you’re limited to a relatively small display screen (typically text-based) and a relatively slow connection (typically between 9.6Kbps and 19.2Kbps), browsing Web sites is inconvenient and painfully slow. In addition, because the only way to enter text is with your phone’s small numeric keypad (no big keyboards here), composing long text messages or participating in extended chat systems are also painful experiences.
