Chapter 17. Smart Searching > The Basic Parts of Every Search Site

The Basic Parts of Every Search Site

Every search site includes two basic components you need to perform a search: a search box, into which you enter your query, and a search button, which you click to initiate your search (sometimes pressing Enter also does the trick). These components may be at the top of some pages, on the left or right side of others, or even at the bottom of a select few. But these items are always there, and they always work the same way.

Some sites have additional components that let you exert more control over your searches. For example, HotBot includes a number of pull-down lists and check boxes you can use to narrow your search parameters. If a site has more components, and if they’re truly useful to you, great. If not, you can probably exert similar control by fine-tuning the keywords and operators in your search query.
