Chapter 40. Running Your Own Web Server > What You Need to Become a Host

What You Need to Become a Host

To host a Web server, certain conditions must be met. In particular, you will need the following:

  • A personal computer with a fast processor (to handle many operations at once), lots of memory, and a big hard disk—think 20GB at a bare minimum

  • A high-speed, persistent Internet connection (broadband DSL or cable, at a minimum)

  • A static IP address from your ISP

  • An uninterruptible power supply (the computer must always be on)

  • Backup software and media

  • Your own domain name

  • Web server software

  • Firewall software
