Chapter 9. Protecting Your System from Viruses > Using an Anti-Virus Program

Using an Anti-Virus Program

Anti-virus software programs are capable of detecting known viruses and protecting your system against new, unknown viruses. These programs check your system for viruses each time your system is booted—and can be configured to check any programs you download from the Internet, as well. (To be safe, you should download any programs from the Internet to a separate directory and scan them with the anti-virus program before you run the new programs on your system.)

You can find several popular anti-virus programs at your local computer software retailer, or you can download them from the manufacturer’s online sites. The most popular anti-virus programs are also available as Web-based subscription services, so you can do all your virus checking online, in the background while you work.
