Chapter 21. Online Shopping > Online Shopping—Is It Safe?

Online Shopping—Is It Safe?

The big online retailers are just as reputable as big “bricks-and-mortar” retailers, offering safe payment, fast shipping, and responsive service. Most of the smaller merchants on the Web are equally safe, although they may not have the same level of customer service as the big sites. Although it’s difficult to judge the size or stability of any online retailer (any size business can hide behind a fancy Web page), chances are if you use a site that is big enough to accept credit card payments, you’re in safe company.

Caution

Accepting credit cards via PayPal or another bill pay service (discussed in the “Credit Cards” section of this chapter) is not the same as having a dedicated merchant charge card account. Although buying from a merchant that uses PayPal may be safe, it’s a sign that you’re dealing with a relatively small company—or even a private individual masquerading as a larger business.
